An incomplete dominant mutation to the keratin gene KRT71 is responsible for the growth of a curly rather than straight coat in certain dogs. The variant analysed in this test, designated as c^2, is found in breeds such as the Bichon Frise, Chesapeake Bay Retriever, Curly Coated Retriever and Lagotto Romagnolo. A closely related variant, designated as c^1, is originally found in the Portuguese Water Dog, though appears in many other breeds.
Características clínicas
Los perros afectados con dos alelos mutados tienen un pelaje de pelo rizado en lugar de un pelaje liso. Los animales que portan un alelo mutado tienen un fenotipo intermedio: un pelaje ondulado. Los pelajes deben tener la longitud suficiente para rizarse en primer lugar.
Información adicional
Hay algunas indicaciones de que la variante representa posiblemente un factor de riesgo genético para algunas formas de displasia folicular en perros.
