Muscular Dystrophy (MD) is an X-linked muscular disorder, equivalent to Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) in humans. The disorder leads to a gradual breakdown of the dog’s muscles and is ultimately fatal. The disease is caused by an X-linked recessive mutation in the DMD gene. As an X-linked recessive disease, it primarily affects male dogs, while females may mostly be carriers.
This specific variant of the disorder is found in the Border Collie.
Primary Open Angle Glaucoma (POAG) is an eye disorder that builds up pressure in the eye and affects the nerves of the retina, causing pain and damaging vision. This variant of the disease, likely caused by a recessive mutation to the gene ADAMTS17, occurs in the Chinese Shar-Pei/Shar Pei/Sharpei. The mutation is also associated in this breed with a similar painful eye condition, Primary Lens Luxation (PLL). Similar variants of POAG also occur in the Basset Hound, Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen, and Basset Fauve de Bretagne.
Lavender Foal Syndrome (LFS, also called Lethal Coat Colour Dilution) is a genetic disorder that is most commonly seen in Arabian horses. It is caused by an autosomal recessive mutation in the Myosin VA (MYO5A) gene. This gene is responsible for producing a protein that plays a key role in intracellular transport, particularly within nerve cells. A mutation in this gene affects proper neurological development and function, leading to the symptoms associated with LFS. The disorder is lethal and animals with 2 copies of the mutation typically are stillborn or die shortly after birth.

Coat colour in cats is controlled by a wide range of different genes working together. One of these genes involved is the Tyrosinase (TYR) gene. This gene produces an enzyme that is required for melanin production, which gives skin, hair, and eyes their colour. Mutations in this gene cause various degrees of Type 1 Oculocutaneous Albinism (OCA1), a failure to produce pigment. This can range between the distinctive point colouration of the Burmese and Siamese cat, to full albinism.
